Pfft, like a physician would get anywhere near the billing department.

Their bill amount in wrong.

It should read: Congratulations! You’re now bankrupt.

Obvious plant needs to make a bootstrap shoe attachment kit so people can work hard and get that healthcare, the kind  enjoyed by evil socialist commie pinko nations who don’t know medical bankruptcy.

Some of the comments on that instagram post are depressing, deplorable drones.

Surprise billing up date:

Out of network anesthesiologist (at in network surgery center with in network surgeon) says they will try to charge me according to BCBS in-network guidelines as they are trying to become in network. This may result in them dropping the $1600 my insurance didn’t cover, but I’m still waiting for a revised bill.

OB/GYN (?) employed by BCBS says that ~$1000 leg compressor things used during surgery to prevent blood clots (my dad has had a pulmonary embolism) are experimental and not medically supported so they won’t pay. Given that these weren’t even mentioned until the morning of the surgery, I’m not sure what I was supposed to have done, it’s not like I can get a second opinion then. Seems like that should be between the surgery center and the insurer, but who knows. I haven’t seen a bill for that yet, so maybe I won’t have to pay it?

Yeesh.

There are so many friggin’ BCBS specialists who take Blue Cross, but not the marketplace Blue Cross that I could scream. If I get this crap, that’s it, I’m done, financially ruined for the rest of my life because the marketplace plans are expensive garbage no one takes.

It’s six years ago now, but I did actually get a pretty good deal on a Marketplace Platinum HMO from Humana. Only good in Travis county (except emergencies) , but was (only) $260/month for a no deductable plan with a $1500 out of pocket max. When I moved to Houston I got the same thing for Harris county, though that was $360/month. Still, it paid out ~ $80,000 in 2014, and a decent chunk in 2015 as well, so definitely a bargain for me. Sad to hear the options are less compelling these days (and of course even $260/month is a lot of money, we really need universal care, whether through more subsidies in the current system, or better yet, some sort of single- payer system )

Yeah. I went for Blue Cross’ highest-level policy since I’m out of Travis County enough that a county-only policy was a non-starter and that was really the only option that wasn’t some limited startup marketplace-only provider I could get. Completely nuts.

And yeah, we really need universal healthcare. This is ridiculous. It’s the number one reason I really want out of freelancing ASAP.
